The most percussive sound is made with a dead muted note, which to me differs from a ghost note. It is either 1) plucked or brushed lightly to produce a faint tone, or in 2) the case of guitar or mandolin (the only instruments I regularly play) the note(s) can be made to ring faintly just by virtue of being fretted (example, the "boom-chick" of fingerpicked guitar with alternating bass, where the off-beats "chick" sound is done in a way to cause ringing "ghost notes" from the strings of the chord that are not plucked or fully plucked) or 3) the strings are lightly muted so as to produce a ghost note - not dead, but muted just enough to produce a faint note. I would never call this a ghost note, but rather a mute or a dead note.Ī ghost note to me is one that is enclosed in parentheses, and this is a "faint" note. That is what is being described in the Wikipedia article if I am reading it correctly. A muted note or dead note is represented by an "x" figure on the stem.

You can find other musicologists that agree, but there are those who make a distinction between dead notes and ghost notes, and I am in that camp. I seem to remember a couple of other message boards out there as well. What happened to Ghostnote Drumsmith is still there, but a ghost town. Seems like a lot has changed in the last several year. The Wikipedia reference for that remark is from a book on bass playing by Glenn Letsch. I have recently restarted my drum/drum building hobby.
